How Baby Helmet Flat Head Therapy Can Help You Child

Helmet therapy is used to subtly correct the structure of the baby's skull over time. Infant skulls are soft plates with gaps between them. As the child grows, these plates expand, steadily stiffen and bind together.

Often when a child rests in the same position, soft plates can form a flat or inconsistent appearance. This is a common disorder called plagiocephaly, and it is not damaging for your infant's brain. If the condition doesn't alleviate on its own, your paediatrician may prescribe realigning exercises or Baby Helmet Flat Head therapy.

In other instances, the skull plates of the baby will fuse too quickly, or in an irregular way. This disorder referred to as craniosynostosis, may require surgical treatment with or without a helmet to improve the head shape.

Some facts about Baby Helmet Flat Head therapy

  • Helmet moulding therapy is not stressful or discomforting for your infant.
  • The duration of treatment may vary depending on your baby's needs, but the standard treatment duration is three months.
  • Helmet therapy is sometimes referred to as cranial orthosis.

How Helmet Flat Head therapy corrects the infant's head shape?

Cranial remoulding helmets are typically made of a stiff outermost casing with a foam liner inside. Gentle and constant pressure is exerted to regulate the natural growth of a baby's head by curtailing it in prominent areas and facilitating in flat regions.

Modifications are required regularly as the head of your baby develops. Essentially, the helmet provides a small, rounded space for the baby's head to expand. And if your child continues to lean his or her head on one side, the helmet will provide a cushion to avoid further flattening.

Does a child need to wear a helmet all the time?

The helmet is designed in a way that it can be worn 23 hours a day and removed while bathing. The rest of the time, your baby should be in the helmet all the time, whether it's playing, resting or eating. One thing we want to stress upon is that the helmet is not at all discomforting for the little one.
